FLOTUS Makes Surprise Trip to Chicago to Tape Oprah Show

Photobucket

This morning I narrowly made it on to the Dan Ryan Expressway before the Chicago Police Department shutdown my entrance ramp. I quickly noticed that the entire 7 lane highway was eerily empty. A quick glance revealed that traffic was at a standstill on all connecting ramps. Wonder who’s in town I thought as I sped away doing 75 trying to make it to my exit hoping it would not be closed as well.

So who was it that was able to bring midday traffic to a complete standstill, in a city recently given the unsavory distinction of having the worst traffic in the U.S.? It was none other than our Fabulous FLOTUS and fellow Southsider, Michelle Obama.

FLOTUS Rocks Red at China State Dinner

Last night First Lady Michelle Obama rocked a red one-shoulder Alexander McQueen silk organza gown at the White House China State Dinner. According to the stylelist blog the gown was created by designer Sarah Burton who succeeded McQueen at his fashion house after his death a year ago. Red in Chinese culture symbolizes happiness and prosperity.

The VIP guest list was a who's who of politics, entertainment, and fashion including Herbie Hancock, Jackie Chan, B.D. Wong, Vera Wang, and Yo Yo Ma. Barbara Streisand and Vogue's Anna Wintour were also in attendance.

First Lady's Open Letter to Parents After Tucson Tragedy

Dear parents,

Like so many Americans all across the country, Barack and I were shocked and heartbroken by the horrific act of violence committed in Arizona this past weekend.  Yesterday, we had the chance to attend a memorial service and meet with some of the families of those who lost their lives, and both of us were deeply moved by their strength and resilience in the face of such unspeakable tragedy.

As parents, an event like this hits home especially hard.  It makes our hearts ache for those who lost loved ones.  It makes us want to hug our own families a little tighter.  And it makes us think about what an event like this says about the world we live in – and the world in which our children will grow up.

First Ladies' Power Lunch or Sbarro Slice?

Today First Lady Michelle Obama will have a private lunch with First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The lunch will be closed to the press and held in the private residence, according to Obama Foodorama. There has been much speculation about what the First Ladies will discuss this afternoon and even more about what they will wear. Will the ladies discuss fashion? Raising young children? Balancing their private and public lives? Their husbands running for reelection in 2012?

Eleanor Clift tossed her two cents into the speculation box over at The Daily Beast and this is what she came up with…

Happy New Year - Let the Rumors Begin

Photobucket

We are only 3 days into the New Year and the nonsense has already begun. Like many of us the First Family has been on vacation for the holidays spending time with family and friends. Whenever there is no news about or from the First Lady there seems to be a small segment of the media that cannot take a break from Michelle Obama news. In short they make things up. That’s putting it nicely, they just outright lie. But for the life of me I cannot understand their obsession with First Lady Michelle Obama being pregnant. Don’t get me wrong if she were there would tons of congratulations and photos here at Michelle Obama Watch. We may even send her one of those swanky Cutie Booty Diaper Cakes.

MRS. OBAMA:  Well, good afternoon, everyone.  How are you all doing?

Well, I'd like to start off by thanking the President and the CEO of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Lieutenant General Pete Osman, who has been terrific.  Thank you so much.  We had a wonderful kick-off of our drive at the White House just a couple of weeks ago, but we couldn’t do this without his leadership.  So thank you so much for all that you do.

I'd also like to recognize Staff Sergeant Sharp, as well as Lieutenant Colonel Woollard, for all the help that they’ve done for today’s event.  You guys are doing a terrific job.  We are so very proud of you.

The thing that I was saying is that in addition to all the work that you already do, the service that you all do for this country, the fact that you are putting it all out for kids across this country just speaks the world of who you all are as people.  And it really makes us very proud.  So, congratulations once again.

And of course big thanks to all the volunteers and all the donors, especially our servicemembers’ families who also play a big role in making this happen.  So again, just another tribute to the hard work that the family members of our militaries put into this country, already sacrificing so much but taking time out of their lives to do even more.  Again, we are proud of you and we’re going to be working hard on your behalf in the years to come.  So thank you, guys.

As you may know, the idea for Toys for Tots actually came from a military family, a Marine reservist and his wife, more than 60 years ago.  And ever since then, military members and their families have made the holidays brighter for millions, and that is millions of kids all across the country.  This is yet again another example of how military families are always ready to do their part for their communities.
