One More Historic Stop Before Leaving Brazil

Michelle Obama seems to become even more alive when she visits another country, especially as she revels in that country's culture and interacts with young people.

On Sunday the First Family visited Christ the Redeemer Statue on Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. This statue of Jesus Christ is considered the second largest Art Deco statue in the world. The statue is 39.6 metres (130 ft) tall, including its 9.5 metres (31 ft) pedestal, and 30 metres (98 ft) wide.

Today First Lady Michelle Obama, accompanied by the WeeMichelles, The First Grandmother, and the WeeMichelles godmother, Mama Kaye, attended and event at the Oca da Tribo Restaurant in Brasilia, Brazil.

First Lady Michelle Obama arrived at 11:37 local wearing a one shoulder silky draped, cream & grey dress ... Young Brazilian men & women sat around the stage (approx 50 teenagers including students from the area and youth ambassadors from the state department program) Guisela Shannon, the wife of the American Ambassador to Brazil (Thomas Shannon) acted as the MC for the event, introducing the First Lady and first speaker, a young woman Raquel (one of the youth ambassadors) who introduced FLOTUS.

FLOTUS Appears in Spot Promoting Youth Tennis

A couple weeks ago, we read around the web that Mrs. O was taping a commercial near Georgetown University. Well, we found it online this week and it is oh, so cute.

Did you catch Mrs. O getting "shushed", funny!

This video comes right as parents are making summer camp and summer activity plans for their children. I wanted my 6 year old daughter to play tennis however she has not shown any interest at all. After seeing this video, she now wants to try it. Never underestimate the power Mrs. O has on our daughters!

Tennis may be an option you never considered for your child, but now may be the time.  After reading a little in the "Youth" section of the USTA website, I found that this is an effort to promote the changes they've made that make the sport less exclusive by increasing the number of children that can participate and requiring fewer expensive tournaments for those trying to make it to the top levels of competition.  There are even tips about selecting "child size" balls and racquets.

Time for the White House Kitchen Garden Spring Planting Party!

It's one of our favorite times of the year here at Michelle Obama Watch! As our readers know we just love the First Lady's White House Kitchen Garden. This year FLOTUS is not letting us down as she, and her team of gardeners, prepare for the third annual Spring planting party.

According to Obama Foodorama...

First Lady Michelle Obama will host a third Spring planting party for her South Lawn Kitchen Garden on Wednesday, March 16, the East Wing has announced. Mrs. Obama will be joined by local school kids, of course. The planting is a bit early this year: In Spring of 2010, the garden was planted on March 31.  

During last year's Spring planting, the Kitchen Garden was expanded by 400 square feet at the First Lady's behest, and it's now a 1,500 square foot patch of green goodness that's produced well over 2,000 pound of crops to date. It grows through all four seasons, thanks to protective Hoop Houses. Start-up costs for the garden in 2009 were less than $200, according to the East Wing. About a third of the crops are donated to Miriam's Kitchen, a DC social services agency that provides meals for the homeless. The rest of the vegetables are used for everything from simple First Family meals to State Dinners.

Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green joined First Lady Michelle Obama, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, USA Hockey executive director Dave Ogrean and the Chicago Blackhawks at The White House on March 11 for a street hockey clinic.  Michelle Obama is displaying to the nation and its youngsters that there are many creative ways to move and by extension be fit.

White House Announces 2011 Easter Egg Roll Date & Theme

The President and First Lady announced today that this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011 with the theme of “Get Up and Go!” promoting health and wellness. The event will feature live music, sports courts, cooking stations, storytelling and, of course, Easter egg rolling. All of the activities will encourage children to lead healthy and active lives and follow the First Lady’s ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative, a national campaign to combat childhood obesity. The White House will open its South Lawn for children aged 12 years and younger and their families. 

White House Easter Egg Roll tickets will be distributed through an online lottery system, allowing guests from across the United States to participate in a tradition that dates back to 1878. The lottery will open for entries on March 10^th at 12:01am and close on March 13^th at 11:59pm. Tickets are free of charge and are non transferable.  Full ticketing details can be found at www.whitehouse.gov/eastereggroll.
