First Lady Michelle Obama is making history again. Mrs Obama will host the first ever Kids’ “State Dinner” Luncheon at the White house on Monday, August 20th. Back in May parents and children all over the country were invited to participate in the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. For the challenge parents worked with their children to create healthy, original lunchtime recipes that were affordable, delicious and followed the nutritional guidelines of the USDA’s ChooseMyPlate.gov.
54 winners, ranging in ages 8-12, from all 50 states, 3 US territories and the District of Columbia, were chosen by a panel of judges from Epicurious, the Department of Education and the Department of Agriculture. These organizations worked with the First Lady on this initiative.
The luncheon menu will feature a selection of healthy recipes from the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge and a performance by Nickelodeon’s music sensation Big Time Rush. The Challenge was created in support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, which aims to help solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.
The event will also be streamed live at www.whitehouse.gov/live.
