FLOTUS Comes Homes & Brings Her Let's Move! Message to the Southside

This afternoon First Lady Michelle Obama came home to the Southside of Chicago and she brought the message of healthier lifestyles through her Let’s Move! initiative with her. Before making remarks at a local Walgreens, that’s been retrofitted to include produce and expanded grocery aisles, FLOTUS participated in a summit with mayors from across the country to discuss and explore strategic methods to transform food desserts into a “food oases”. Food desserts describe neighborhoods where healthy, affordable food is difficult to obtain.

After her remarks at Walgreens FLOTUS headed over to Iron Street Urban Farms, a 7-acre site, also on Chicago’s Southside that produces healthy and sustainable food throughout the year. Iron Street is also the Chicago headquarters of Growing Power, a company focused on providing communities access to healthy food. The farm hires local residents to learn about the land as they farm. It also sells fresh produce to local restaurants and markets.

While I applaud Mrs Obama and her efforts to shed a light on food desserts and working to transform them, I’m not sure I buy the whole idea of Walgreens as an alternative to a full service supermarket

Mmm Cheddar Biscuits- First Lady Michelle Obama Announces Plan by Red Lobster to Reduce Calories and Sodium

In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a fan of Let's Move. We've already gone over which portions of the program I find troubling, mainly identifying, labeling and targeting fat children for increased scruitying (nomatter how well meaning).  Since this blog is pro-Michelle Obama, the compromise we've made around here is that I'll keep my mouth shut about the portions of Let's Move I find abhorrent and y'all won't pop off at the mouth in the comments about fat kids.

Despite the fact that a portion of the program that teaches vulnerable fat children that they are diseased, doomed, and undersireable, no one can deny that First Lady Michelle Obama has been consistent and driven in carrying out the goals of the Let's Move program, some of which I agree with. She's not just giving lip service to her goals, she's racking up points by garnering small victories that might benefit us all.

This week she announced a program with the company that owns Red Lobster ( mmm cheddar bisquits - too bad I gave up flour):

First Lady Michelle Obama joined Darden Restaurants and Partnership for a Healthier America today to announce a “breakthrough” health and wellness commitment in the restaurant industry. Darden, whose brands include Red Lobster, Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze, is the world’s largest full service restaurant company and owns and operates 1,900 restaurants in 49 states, serving over 400 million meals per year. Darden is committing to reduce its calorie and sodium footprints, and to provide greater choice and variety to families through changes to its kids’ menus.

Across the entire Darden portfolio of brands, the company is working toward a 10 percent reduction of calories and sodium over five years and a 20 percent reduction in calories and sodium over 10 years.

The portion I am most interested in is the decrease in sodium.  If you are ever forced to watch your sodium intake, you will soon find that its basically impossible to eat any type of prepared or packaged food anywhere, except McDonalds where about the only thing low sodium is an ice cream cone and an order of french fries without the salt. I actually was quite despondent when my doctor put me on a 1500 mg limit for 6 weeks - a low sodium diet is a very special Hell. Luckily I can control my BP with exercise and cooking my own meals most of the time.

So to the extent that restaurants cut back on ridiculous amounts of sodium, that's a good thing, especially for African Americans who are afflicted with high blood pressure. By the By you can ask Red Lobster to leave the salt off of any of the grilled options and the veggies too - otherwise, its insane how much salt they put in stuff.

I hold out hope that one day Michelle Obama's team will reach out to the Health at Every Size community and discuss the radical concept that fitness, health and weight are seperate concepts that are not necessarily interchangeable.

Now, I'm off to my Saturday morning running club for fat people. No seriously, we're training to run a 10K (pray for me).

Get your blood pressure checked and watch the sodium!

P.S. To any fat kids reading this, keep your head up- it gets better.
